On-the-job search and strategic bargaining

چکیده

This paper studies wage bargaining in a simple economy in which both employed and unemployed workers search for better jobs. The axiomatic Nash bargaining solution and standard strategic bargaining solutions are inapplicable because the set of feasible payoffs is nonconvex. I instead develop a strategic model of wage bargaining between a single worker and firm that is applicable to such an environment. I show that if workers and firms are homogeneous, there are market equilibria with a continuous wage distribution in which identical firms bargain to different wages, each of which is a subgame perfect equilibrium of the bargaining game. If firms are heterogeneous, I characterize market equilibria in which more productive firms pay higher wages. I compare the quantitative predictions of this model with Burdett and Mortensen’s [1998. Wage differentials, employer size and unemployment. International Economic Review 39, 257–273.] wage posting model and argue that the bargaining model is theoretically more appealing along important dimensions. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. How much do Workers Search ?

In this paper, I consider four determinants of wages: productivity, workers’ bargaining power, competition between employers due to on-the-job search, and search intensity by workers. Workers can increase their job offer arrival rate through costly search. Employers take into consideration the search intensity choices of their employees when the two parties jointly set wages. Using a Nash barga...

Strategic Wage Bargaining, Labor Market Volatility, and Persistence

This paper modifies the standard Mortensen-Pissarides job matching model in order to explain the cyclical behavior of vacancies and unemployment. The modifications include strategic wage bargaining (Hall and Milgrom, 2006) and convex labor adjustment costs. The results reveal that our model replicates the cyclical behavior of both variables remarkably well. First, we show that strategic wage ba...

On-the-Job Search, MinimumWages, and Labor Market Outcomes in an Equilibrium Bargaining Framework1

We look at the impact of a binding minimum wage on labor market outcomes and welfare distributions in both partial and general equilibrium models of matching and bargaining a currentlyemployed individual can meet other potential employers (on-the-job search). In analyzing and estimating the model, we use two different specifications of the Nash bargaining problem. In one, firms engage in a Bert...
